Japan Airlines is renting clothes to reduce carbon emissions 🛫

Japan Airlines is taking sustainable tourism to a whole new level, by offering travelers the option to pack light and rent clothing on arrival.

How is this more sustainable? Weight has a huge impact on carbon emissions; on a flight from Tokyo to New York, each kilogram of baggage weight results in an additional 0.75kg of carbon emissions. By offering clothing rentals at the destination, JAL aims to create a travel experience with minimal luggage and reduced CO2 emissions. 🌍

The pilot (pun intended 😅) is on from now until the end of August 2024 and team Herby can’t wait to see the results! Would you test it out? 🤔

Amazon deforestation declines by 34% in 2023 🌳

During the first six months of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's term, deforestation in Brazil's Amazon has declined by 34%, reaching its lowest level in four years. 👏

Stricter environmental rules led to 1,023 square miles of cleared rainforest, compared to 1,544 square miles under the previous administration. The deforestation rate in June, typically a period of increased activity, decreased by 41%.

Why is this important? The Amazon rainforest produces 20% of the planet’s oxygen) and stores a significant portion of the world’s carbon. When it’s cleared, that carbon is instead released into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. 🥵

President Lula aims to end deforestation in the Amazon by 2030 and this year’s results show he’s making strides in the right direction. These results also demonstrate how large of an impact a political party can have.

What it takes to upskill a cleantech army 👷‍♀️

Georgia is attracting BILLIONS in clean tech investment, thanks in big part to Georgia Quick Start: a state-funded workforce training program that’s getting local talent ready for solar, battery, and electric vehicle manufacturing jobs! 👷‍♀️

Why is this important? The U.S. is expected to add over 900,000 new clean energy manufacturing jobs in the next decade. But few workers have the skills to meet this requirement today. In comes Quick Start — the free training program has transformed workers from industries like carpet manufacturing into advanced manufacturing professionals for solar companies! ☀

We’re excited about Quick Start and the potential to replicate this model across more cities in Canada and the U.S.!
